A crypto bridge moves the same asset between blockchains (for example USDC from Ethereum to Solana) through smart contracts you connect your wallet to, while an instant swap exchanges one coin for another — even across completely different chains like Ethereum to Bitcoin or Monero — by simply sending a deposit, with no wallet connection. Bridges are best for moving tokens inside the EVM world; instant swaps are best for native BTC, XMR and anything a bridge doesn't reach. Compare cross-chain swaps such as ETH → SOL in the form above.
- 0 wallet connections for a swap
- 300+ coins via instant swaps
- 5–30 min typical swap
- Billions lost in bridge hacks
Swap vs bridge at a glance
| Bridge | Instant swap (no-KYC exchange) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Moves the same token to another chain | Exchanges one coin for another, any chain to any chain |
| How you use it | Connect wallet, approve and sign contracts | Send a deposit to an address, receive to your address |
| Native BTC / XMR | Usually only wrapped versions | Yes, native coins |
| Main risk | Smart-contract hacks, malicious approvals | Counterparty during the swap (minutes) |
| Privacy | Same wallet visible on both chains | No on-chain link between send and receive wallets |
| KYC | None | None on no-KYC exchanges |
How crypto bridges work
Most bridges lock your token in a contract on chain A and mint a representation on chain B, or use pools of liquidity on both sides. You connect a wallet like MetaMask, approve the token and sign. It is fast and cheap between EVM chains, but every step touches smart contracts — and bridges have been among the most hacked targets in crypto, with several incidents worth hundreds of millions of dollars each. Token approvals left open can also be abused later.
How instant swaps work
An instant exchange gives you a deposit address. You send coin A from any wallet; it sends coin B to the address you entered. No wallet connection, no approvals, and the two sides can be on unrelated chains — Ethereum to Bitcoin, Solana to Monero, Tron to Litecoin. The exchange holds your funds for the few minutes of the swap, so pick services with a public record. More in how instant exchanges work and custodial vs non-custodial swaps.
When to use a bridge vs a swap
- Same token, EVM to EVM (USDC Ethereum → Base): a reputable bridge is fine.
- Into native Bitcoin: swap — ETH → BTC gives real BTC, not WBTC.
- Into Monero: only swaps — no bridge reaches XMR. Try ETH → XMR or USDC → XMR.
- Between non-EVM chains (Solana, Tron, TON, Litecoin): swaps are simpler — e.g. SOL → ETH.
- Privacy: a bridge keeps the same wallet on both sides; a swap to a fresh address breaks the visible link. See does swapping hide the source of funds.
How to do a cross-chain swap (step by step)
- Pick the pair and networks in the form above, e.g. ETH → SOL.
- Compare live quotes from 30+ exchanges and aggregators — see swap aggregators explained.
- Paste your receiving address on the destination chain and a refund address on the source chain.
- Send the deposit on the exact network shown — see wrong network recovery.
- Receive the new coin in 5–30 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a bridge and a swap?
A bridge moves the same token to another blockchain via smart contracts; a swap exchanges one coin for a different one, and instant swaps can cross any chains without connecting your wallet.
Is a bridge or a swap safer?
They carry different risks. Bridges risk smart-contract hacks and bad approvals; instant swaps risk the exchange during the few minutes it holds your coins. Choose audited bridges and exchanges with a strong track record.
Can I bridge to Bitcoin or Monero?
Not natively. Bridges give wrapped tokens on other chains. To get real BTC or XMR, use an instant swap like ETH → XMR.
Do bridges require KYC?
Most decentralized bridges don't, but they link your wallet on both chains. No-KYC swaps also need no ID and can send to a fresh address.
Which is cheaper?
Between EVM chains a bridge is often cheaper. For different coins or non-EVM chains, an instant swap usually costs less overall because it's one step.
Cross chains without connecting your wallet: ETH → SOL, ETH → BTC, ETH → XMR or all pairs. No account, no ID, no logs.
