Monero (XMR) is private by default — every transaction hides sender, receiver and amount — while Zcash (ZEC) offers strong optional privacy that only protects you when you use shielded addresses on both sides. If you want privacy without having to think about it, Monero is the safer choice; Zcash is excellent when used fully shielded. Both can be swapped with no account on ZEC → XMR and BTC → XMR across 30+ no-KYC exchanges.
- 100% of XMR transactions private
- Optional privacy on ZEC
- 16 ring members per XMR input
- ~2 min XMR block time
Monero vs Zcash at a glance
| Monero (XMR) | Zcash (ZEC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | Mandatory for everyone | Optional (shielded vs transparent) |
| Hides sender | Ring signatures (16 decoys) | zk-SNARK proofs (shielded only) |
| Hides receiver | Stealth addresses | Shielded addresses |
| Hides amount | RingCT | Yes, when shielded |
| Transparent transactions | Impossible | Possible (t-addresses) |
| Supply | Tail emission, 0.6 XMR per block | Capped at 21 million |
| Block time | ~2 minutes | ~75 seconds |
| Trusted setup | None | None for Orchard (Halo 2); older pools used one |
How Monero privacy works
Monero combines three techniques on every transaction. Ring signatures mix your real input with 15 decoys, so an observer can't tell which one was spent. Stealth addresses generate a one-time address for every payment, so your public address never appears on-chain. RingCT hides the amount. Because everyone uses the same scheme, there is no "private minority" that stands out — the whole chain is one large anonymity set. More detail in Is Monero traceable? and our Monero glossary entry.
How Zcash privacy works
Zcash uses zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs): a shielded transaction proves it is valid without revealing who paid whom or how much. That is mathematically stronger than decoys — when it is used. The catch is that Zcash also supports transparent addresses that work exactly like Bitcoin. Funds moving from transparent to shielded and back leave visible links, and amounts and timing can match up. Modern wallets such as Zashi shield by default, and the shielded share of ZEC has grown, but you still need to confirm both sender and receiver use shielded addresses.
Which privacy coin is actually more private?
- Default privacy: Monero wins — you can't make a transparent Monero transaction by mistake.
- Cryptographic strength of a single shielded transaction: Zcash's zero-knowledge proofs hide more than decoys do.
- Real-world mistakes: Monero is more forgiving. Most Zcash de-anonymization comes from users mixing transparent and shielded flows.
- Exchange access: Monero has been delisted from several large centralized exchanges, which is exactly why no-KYC exchanges are the usual way to get it. ZEC is still listed more widely, often only for transparent deposits.
Rule of thumb: use Monero for private savings and payments; use Zcash only if you keep everything shielded from end to end.
How to swap Zcash to Monero (step by step)
- Open the pair ZEC → XMR or use the form above.
- Compare live rates from no-KYC exchanges, best first, with limits shown.
- Paste your Monero address from your own wallet — see the best Monero wallets.
- Send ZEC to the deposit address. Many exchanges accept transparent ZEC deposits only; check the network note.
- Receive XMR after confirmations, usually within 10–30 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Monero more private than Zcash?
By default, yes: every Monero transaction is private, while Zcash is only private when both sides use shielded addresses. A fully shielded Zcash transaction is very strong, but transparent ZEC is as visible as Bitcoin.
Can Zcash transactions be traced?
Transparent Zcash transactions can be traced just like Bitcoin. Shielded-to-shielded transactions hide sender, receiver and amount, but moving funds in and out of the shielded pool can leak links through timing and amounts.
Can I swap ZEC to XMR without KYC?
Yes — non-custodial instant exchanges swap ZEC to XMR with no account or ID. Compare them on ZEC → XMR.
Why do exchanges delist Monero but keep Zcash?
Regulated exchanges must trace deposits. Zcash's transparent mode lets them do that; Monero has no transparent mode, so some exchanges prefer to drop it. See how to buy Monero without KYC.
Which is better for long-term holding?
That depends on your priorities: Zcash has a 21 million cap, Monero has a small permanent tail emission that keeps miners paid. For privacy alone, Monero's mandatory model is simpler to use safely.
